We’d be delighted to welcome you to one of the biggest events in the Emmanuel calendar.  There’s nothing more Christmassy than belting out your top six or seven well-known Christmas carols, sipping on warming mulled wine, munching on a seasonal mincepie … and all in flickering candlelight.  That’s what’s on offer at our Carols by Candlelight.  Hear the traditional story read from the Bible in short excerpts, and listen whilst the true meaning of Christmas is explained.  How better to get ready for all the festivities!

This Sunday, we heard about the fourth mission agency that Emmanuel is supporting.  Aim International (founded as Africa Inland Mission) is an evangelical Christian mission agency serving across Africa, and ministering to Africans living around the world.  They work in partnership with the African church to reach Africa’s unreached peoples with the Good News of Jesus Christ, and to develop leaders for the fast-growing church.  There’s loads of great stuff about AIM International on their website.

Incidentally, at next Sunday’s first International Sunday, their European Director, Andrew Chard, will be our speaker.  Plus there’ll be lots of information available about all four of the mission agencies we’ve heard about these last few weeks.

This is the inspiring aim that TEAR Fund have set themselves … to build a global network of 100,000 churches working together to release 50 million people from material and spiritual poverty over the next ten years.  TEAR Fund is another of the mission agencies that Emmanuel is seeking to support.  Find out more about them here.

We’re recommending this booklet, ‘Listen Up!’ as a really good read for all of us this autumn.  It’s a practical guide to listening to sermons.

But, you may ask, why on earth does anyone need a guide on how to listen to sermons?  Don’t we simply need to ‘be there’ and stay awake?  The fact is, much more is involved in truly listening to Bible teaching than just sitting and staring at the preacher.  Jesus said: ‘Consider carefully how you listen.’

Christopher Ash outlines seven ingredients for healthy listening, with really practical suggestions on how to hear better.  He then deals with how to respond to bad sermons – ones that are dull, or inadequate, or wrong.  And finally, he challenges us with ideas for helping and encouraging our Bible teachers to give sermons that will really help us to grow as Christians.
