God is wonderfully creative.  And since we’re all made in His image, He’s designed us to be creative too.  We’re also hard-wired to worship – to express our delight and enjoyment of the things that we love.  The Bible says that God is the one who deserves all of our praise and that when we enjoy the other fantastic things He gives us, we should say thanks to Him for that gift.

It’s no wonder then that as Christians we love to sing praise to God and express our thanks to Him through music.  At Emmanuel we believe that our whole lives should be lived in worship to God not just in the singing slot at church called ‘worship’.  But it’s right that when we come together we should remind ourselves and one another who God is and what He’s done for us, and to stir one another up to express our appreciation for Him.  We sing throughout the service to respond to what we’re hearing.

Singing is also a fantastic way of learning about God.  You might not be whistling the sermon in the shower the next day, but the words from the songs can stick with us in a really helpful way.  That’s one reason why we want all of the songs we sing at Emmanuel to be full of solid, weighty truth about God, as well as beautiful poetry.  The Psalms give us the best example of this, and we often sing songs which are deeply rooted in the words of the Bible.  We regularly introduce new songs which particularly fit whatever part of the Bible we’re looking at on a given week.  But we also like to hold onto the best of the older hymns and songs too.

Our music group changes from week to week, but is always contemporary in feel.  There are lots of talented musicians among us and, depending on the week, you’ll hear the keyboard, guitar, flute, bass, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, drums and singing.  The band don’t want to draw any attention to themselves but instead are there to help us all draw attention to Jesus, giving the congregation something to sing along to, rather than someone to watch.  The words for the songs are on the service sheets and up on the screen.  If you don’t know how a song goes, you’ll soon pick it up.  Or alternatively you can feel free to just listen if you’d rather not sing.

We want to honour God in everything we do and music is simply a part of how we do that.

If you’d be interested in playing in the band, head over to our ‘serve’ page.  If you have any questions about the songs that we sing, do get in touch via our contact page.
